The night of our most recent tornadoes I was having a hard time sleeping due to the pressure change that I was feeling in my bones. I left the bedroom and went online -- started searching for me and my husband's silver patterns. In Both patterns (majestic and tuscany )we are lacking a few pieces and since they are both old, my mother suggests that I find those pieces now while I can still find it. In the midst of my search, I found this fabulous web site that allows you to search by name or initials and even sort out baby items. I found some very special and exquisite pieces on here. Here is a quick look of some great products from the Atlanta Market this winter. Juliska came out with a great outdoor entertaining collection complete with stemless glasses and a beverage dispenser. Love the Acrylic glass from Italy - I looks so real and like crystal! Fun Glass bottles from Vietri. Beautiful colorful barware and linens. And by the way, I don't like sectionals - but I loved this one from Moss Studio! And those trashcans - can just see them in a teenagers room!

Sunday Flowers for the Bishop

The episcopal bishop of the US was visiting Birmingham to install the new bishop of the diocese. And was assigned to preach at our church the following day. My flower partner and were on the schedule for this Sunday. Whether by chance or choosing it was us. We try when possible to draw from the reading some inspiration and interpret it in our displays.

This weekend's reading was about Jesus's baptism in the woods. Tell me what you think?

Simply Decking My Halls

We went for simplicity for our decorations this year. And I love gold, so I went to excess there. Gold tablecloth, placemats, chargers, votives, vases, and ribbon! I love seeing the wreath hanging inside our house...i get much more enjoyment than seeing one on our front door. We did do garland around the front, but focused more on the inside.

And our tree with just white lights in our whiskey barrel again. We chose our front window and moved some furniture this time. I love moving things around!

Mrs. Holiday Punch

I made this Mrs. Holiday champagne punch for our neighborhood progressive dinner. It was a hit and very festive! We omitted the St. Germain, as we can't get it in Alabama - but it was still great! I will buy some the next time we go to Georgia though! I've heard its amazing!

A concoction of champagne, pom juice, and a few other ingredients. But the pretty part was the ice ring made in a bundt pan. Make sure you allow plenty of time for the ice ring to freeze..otherwise all else is a breeze! And the edible glitter or sprinkles is key...It makes it extra festive!!!

Last week, I was looking for a basket to put a 3' Christmas tree in for a client. I went to Garden Ridge. And of course I had to look at everything else as well. I loved these fun rattan wrapped vases and hurricanes. And I'm sorry I didn't write down prices, but I'm sure everything is under $12. Great for a beach house or porch.

And I loved these gold rimmed handle holders.

It would be fun to mix shapes and sizes and mix flowers and candles.

Here is what I did with those beautiful flowers "left-over" from the charity event a few weeks ago. I brought them home and re-arranged them in my Rothschild Bird tureen. They looked great with my gourds and pumpkin napkins. I was so happy to have such a huge beautiful bunch of flowers that we had my neighbor over for an impromptu dinner! Be thankful for what you have and are given!

Entrance Hall Before and After

A client's house before and after. She had a beautiful antique oyster chest, but the artwork and lamp weren't working in her favor. I feel like when you walk in a house it should make a statement.Wall color has changed too. I need to also take a daylight picutre, but seeing as I'm getting a little behind I had to share this tiny (but huge) transformation.

The wall were painted a beautiful warm grey color, Titanium by Benjamin Moore. We bought a statement mirror and a beautiful Simon Pearce Lamp and a the lantern I had posted about from Scotts. (Prior the chandelier was a black iron piece and just didn't fit with the formality of the house.) Hope you enjoy! The previous den transformation is coming along. So stay tuned for some more before and after pics!

Here is my latest find at Southeastern Salvage...If you haven't been, start popping in every few weeks...you just never know what you'll find. These loveseats were $549 each. Available in charcoal, chocolate and natural. If we were only in a bigger house, then this would be great at the foot of our bed!

Charity Tablescapes Event

Last week Table Matters participated in a Tablescapes event at St. Mary's Episcopal church that benefited their GED program. Not only were the tablescapes there for decoration, but event goers actually dined at the tables!! It was so much fun!

I started with my centerpiece and chose a stunning Jan Barboglio piece with a mercury vessel. It was perfect since the arrangement was high above the heads of the ladies. Then for the linens, I chose some items that I had at home since these might risk getting dirty!

The tablecloth is an Ann Gish silk ministripe topper. And the napkins are Chilewich in a khaki color, matching the stripes in the cloth and some beautiful, mulit-color beaded napkin rings. I also scattered mercury vases about the table and filled them with seeded eucalyptus. The placemats coordinated with the topper and the chargers were a combination of Juliska's Berry and Thread and Jardin du Monde. And the new Juliska colette Plum glasses set the mood and gave me inspiration for the flowers.

With the inspiration from the plum colette glasses, I chose purple flowers of all shades to fill the mercury vessel - hydrangeas, stock, dahlias, smoke branch and seeded eucalyptus.

And our beautiful meal...cooked by some ladies of the church! Delicious!

Preppy Wedding Shower

One of my clients hosted a wedding shower and the bride loves all things preppy. Here is the letterpress invitation finished off with grosgrain ribbon.

As the guest arrived they were to fill out an envelope with their address, so the bride would have it for her thank you notes (along with new stationary!). And there are also scorecards for a game in which they played at the shower - Guess the brides age in various photos scattered about the house.

Here is the setting a table filled with pink and navy and lime green. The napkins were finished off with a knot of the grosgrain ribbon.

Here is a close-up of the setting. We planned for sorbet for dessert. so each guest has a old fashioned teaspoon in various bright colors at the top of her setting!

And last, but not least the bride's chair - Tied with bows and beautiful pink and white flowers.

Den Design Project

I'm working on a den redesign project for a client.

Before - Dark and Drab.

And we want to bring in some colors from this beautiful painting that hangs above the mantle.

We have ordered a new sofa and it is en route. It will be in the perennials fabric shown in the bottom right corner - A chenille beige. The two club chairs are in the olive and brown chenille shown on the left. I'm wanting to use that Fabricut cream trim on the curtains to dress them up. Right now, they are white and I want to flange them and top it with this trim.

And now for the pop of color: throw pillows for the new sofa. We looked at these two fabrics.

I'd personally prefer the on the right with the more subtle colors. I think they are both great choices. My client chose the one on the left - she loves red! Its the New Sevilla fabric by Lee Jofa.

Thursday Night Delivery - Birthday Dinner Party

The client's husband made a very big outdoor table to seat 14 people and she had a big cloth made in a mushroom color and we did burlap placemats with Mottahedah's Tobacco Leaf pattern and Herend's Blue Chinese Bouquet...beautiful green striped napkins and lots of tealights and this beautiful Fortunata clover leaf bowl filled with orchids and foliage...I'm hoping the client will send me some photos soon!

Curb Appeal - Front Door Love

So I've been wanting to fix/change my front door and shutter color for a while now. My door really need to be taken down and totally stripped. At one point a few years ago, I thought I could do it by myself. After a few bottles of chemical stripper, I found myself with only one week before a friend's baby shower(and burns on my arms)...I gave up and just had a random handyman re-paint it the same color. Here she is most recently (we had some friends over to celebrate their engagement!)

So Here is phase one, striped down and primed( by a professional - Mike Barton). And you can see the new color, Benjamin Moore's Caldwell Green, on the shutters. I'm also going to change out the door hardware, house numbers and get a door knocker ( I never put one back up after the 1st painting expedition.) And I always had a wreath of some sort on the door since my door was SO UGLY!!! (see above picture!)

And here it is!! All done..well almost. I'm loving the new look - lighter and brighter! Still need to put the house numbers up and new knocker from Sam's Welding. And I'm going to grow creeping fig on the rise of my concrete stairs. We're working on these projects this weekend!

Here is the knocker..it arrived Friday from Washington State. The knocker is hand forged; it is a twisted railroad spike (which Rogers and John Paul should like) which has it's own unique sound when struck against the back plate.

And the finished product........we're loving the change!! Can't wait for the creeping fig to get growing and creeping up my stairs so I can manicure it. Picture to come in a few months!

Baby Carriage Flower Arrangement

One of my friends gave birth recently to a precious baby boy. When I worked at Boxwoods in Atlanta..I often made these for clients. The beginning construction is very similar to the wire shoe that I did for Gus Mayer. So basically, you line the carriage with sheet moss and then cut a garbage bag to fit it, as a liner. Then you put packing peanuts in for drainage and then soil.

I love using hydrangeas for these carriage as the provide a big pop of color. You'll want the type found in a greenhouse (hothouse grown).

The 4"-6" pot usually does the trick. And if you have room add some ferns, foliage and ivy.

Then you'll want to secure the wheels with ribbon or raffia. It dresses it up a bit, while providing more stability.

Then a pretty bow on the handle!

The wire carriages can be found locally at Leaf and Petal in Mountain Brook or in Atlanta at Boxwoods.

Summer Anniversary Party

I never posted photos from this Surprise Anniversary Party that I did back in May. I blogged on the prep, but failed to post any photos when I finished. So here are some photos for your enjoyment.

This was in the master bathroom. This is a great vase from Roost - easy to arrange, even if you aren't a professional. You just prop flowers between the silver twigs.

These were on the table in the Entrance Hall.

I redid these 'everlasting' arrangements to make them taller and seasonless. Previously there were some short topiaries with pine cones and red berries. HUGE improvement.

And this potted orchid on the coffee table in the living room.

The client has a collection of goblets that we used on the table.

Fabulous Finds Fridays...Easy Care Silk Napkins

A few weeks ago I had a couple over that was newly engaged. I love planning a little dinner party and especially setting the table. After much debate and filing through my linen drawers I decided on pewter Juliska chargers with my Anna Weatherly china and these Kim Seybert Purple double-faced silk napkins.

Although my husband dissed the color, as being too much like "Mardi Gras." I used them anyway, as they are happy and fun and we were celebrating (and they looked great with my orchid...)

These napkins are also incredibly easy care and come in a variety of colors. Machine wash gentle cycle and then air dry - no ironing - no kidding! Come and see me at Table Matters to get some.

Fabulous Finds Fridays...Stir Stick Paint Color Reminders!

So I've made the plunge and I've joined Pinterest. This week I've really enjoyed looking at different things. One thing that I happened upon and thought it was totally ingenious was these stir stick paint color reminders.

I try to keep a hand written list of my paint colors, but inevitably I loose it. This is such a great idea and I would definitely add ceiling and trim color to this fan of twine bundled stir sticks. Those I can't ever remember!!!

Tucked Away...Stools

Last weekend at Target I saw this amazing stool{for under $50}, I couldn't wait for Friday (and its been too long without a post), so I thought I'd share today. I love the hexagonal shape too...a little different.

Now you may be asking what would I do with little storage ottoman stools (other than store stuff....duh). Tuck them away under consoles or desks or tables. And pull them out if you need more seating for guests. Otherwise, they just look good and soften the room. Can you imagine this photo below without the stools?

Super Easy Sunday Supper

Have you ever bought the pizza dough at Publix (from the bakery section)? It's totally worth it. On Sunday afternoon my husband I were discussing what to have for dinner. We had leftovers from the previous nights, so we felt we should eat/use some of that. We used the previous night's chicken in the form of a BBQ Chicken pizza.

Rolled and tossed out the dough. Caramelized onions. Diced green bell peppers. Sprinkled salt and olive oil over the top of the dough. Now the sauce: BBQ sauce. And the toppings: chicken, mozzarella, green bell peppers, caramelized onions, and buffalo mozzarella. Bake at 400 for 20 minutes!

Et Voila....the easiest, best Sunday Supper!

A Day of Rest

First, I must apologize for a lack of blog posts this week. My excuses: HUGE annual summer sale at the store, re-doing client's bookcases (not to mention going shopping for all the fillings), planning a 1 year birthday party for a client (did I mention that it was this weekend) and working on a client's dining room.

So today is a much needed day of rest for me and my little family. Parker is in one of his favorite spots this morning - behind the dining table. Have a great Sunday!

Can You Say Market Day in Mountain Brook Village?

One of the most anticipated events in Mountain Brook is upon us...the tents are UP! It's Market Day (or Bastille Day) - the European style village wide sale. Table Matters and Suite Dreams are moving a lot of beautiful merchandise....getting ready for new inventory and mixing things up a bit. Its a great time to stock up on basics at a discount, but also buy a really cool piece of furniture at 75%.

Today I found this Habidecor bathmat that I'd been eying over in the clearance corner at Suite Dreams. WAS $198...NOW $40.....what do you think? I love the lace-like feel of it - considering the rest of the bath is ummm stone, stripes and neutral.

And where do I begin about Table Matters...the 50% off linens and glassware. Check out these Kim Seybert wine glasses (champagne color) that are on the 50% off table.....

And the furniture...at both stores are really marked down...if you are looking for something..now is the time. Get in the car and drive yourself to the village...you might just want to go back everyday! You never know what is going to get marked down MORE!!!

It was the 4th of July...

Happy late 4th of July!!! If I were a ~~real~~ professional blogger, I would have given you all these ideas last week, but seeing as I like to implement before I give advice - here it is now. These were the decorations that we I set up for my mother's birthday celebration.

Notice the paint chip bunting hanging on the cabinet. I strung it together in the car on the way down. For more information on the bunting...click here. I think it turned out great! And the chinese lanterns were very effective (and easy to pack). I probably would have done some vases with smaller necks, but thought these galvanized flower buckets would be ~~easy to travel with~~. unbreakable.

The red raffia placemats I found on the 'fly' at Garden Ridge for $1...no I didn't leave out a 0...yes a dollar. And the Pomegranate seaspray chainstitch napkins, at Table Matters of course - my first stop for quality linens.

And did I mention...I love the subtle red and seaspray combination!!!

Fabulous Finds Fridays...Oyster Art!

This past week I have been vacationing with my family in Grayton Beach, Fla. Most mornings, I've been taking long walks and on the way home stopping in some shops to look around. In this shopping development, I found a cute little art studio (not much of anything else in the shopping center). It's right off 283 before you get to 30-A...I think its called the Shops of Grayton Beach.

So in The Studio, I found these eclectic mixed media oyster paintings. I love them. And they were only $45. These were 6 x 6.

They are made by an artist, Jennifer Allen - and she is actually from South Mobile County. What's the chance that I love something by a Mobile artist. These were done on old tin ceiling tiles, but on her website she also has them on salvaged wood and on shutters! For my Mobile readers, her website indicates that you can buy her work at Ashland Gallery.

Right now, I don't have a beach house...but maybe one day. I thought how cute would it be to put a grouping of these in a bar area to create an "Oyster Bar." And if oysters aren't your thing, don't worry she has crabs, fish and crawfish.

The Alley's Alley Garden

So, apparently I'm back into gardening. I've created another new bed at the back of our house, where there is a sidewalk leading to our english ampitheatre patio. My neighbor artfully coined my new bed - The Alley's Alley. (I guess it is an alley of sorts.)

We started with foundation plantings of Kleim's Hardy Gardenia's - I wanted something evergreen, but also I wanted some flowers to see, smell and pick. (Klein's Hardy has a rounded form, growing to 4 feet. The flowers are single, ivory and very fragrant. The foliage is lustrous green. It also has good cold hardiness.)

Then I came back with some purple coneflower and russian sage And I found this great zinc piece in my shed during a spring cleaning exercise. And found those beautiful sunflowers to fill it! Happy Summer!

From Drab to FAB!

So I'm working with a new client on her house. And our main goal has been short-term -- fluffing for a party. But eventually, there will be (colored) paint on the walls. And we'll do some reupholstering and some dressy-er pillows!

Here is the after (or the middle), you can see we got new lamps (from Antiquites in Mtn. Brook Village). The dark ones were a drab and weighing down the look the room (new ones also added height). We also got a new coffee table from L'Argent in Homewood. I love the mirrored piece with the brass frame - just gives a more formal look to the room. Its hard to see in the above pic - but the coffee table before was a heavy, scroll-y iron and had a pink marble top. It was also very short and the new provides some more length thus lengthing the room. Next, we'll be putting Banjamin Moore's Titanium on the walls...I can't wait!!! And reupholstering some chairs in new fabric!

Paint Chip 4th of July Flags

I've started working on the decorations for my Mom's Birthday which happens to be the 4th of July. My mom is a decorator, so I thought the buntings made of paint chips would be very apropos considering that she is a decorator. Here is the beginning of my bunting....

Shared Garden Space

So our little garden between me and my neighbor's house has come a long way. In case you didn't see my earlier post...here is the link. We've both added more plants and some sturdier stones for our pathway.

I've added more hydrangeas and will probably do more hostas. As for my neighbor, she's put in 2 limelight hydrangeas and a flowering peach tree in the back corner. And she has 2 terracotta pots with boxwoods to mark the entrance of our little path (see the top picture). We also found an abandoned rose the back corner!

I found these cute preppy rugs at Garden Ridge. Just makes me think summer in the hot colors. These are cute 2' x 3's for only $7.99. Great for a bathroom, entrance doormat or in a kitchen behind the sink. And would be super cute at a beach place if you are so fortunate to have one!

Sunny Happy Yellow Chair

Last Saturday was the first 'off'' day that I hadn't worked since before Labor Day. I was exhausted, but still wanted to do a little shopping around for myself (after I went to the pool for a few hours.) I found myself hitting places in my neighborhood - one of those places being Stray Cats in Irondale. I found this sunny little french inspired chair and fell in love. I love the dainty lines and the color (although some might find it deplorable) would be perfect in my master bedroom. Great chair for my dressing table, as I'm using an uncomfortable stool now. And at $99.....it was a steal.

Here she is...making herself at home in my master bedroom. I'm sure one day I might recover her. But right now, I'm loving the romantic nature of this yellow crushed velevet.

I LOVE these teak containers that I saw at the Arbor in Southside this week. And they were an amazing price - $130! I loved the steel banding and the delicate bands of teak.

Just makes me want to start a new container garden!

Also on their website, I found a few other finds....could just see myself sipping a glass of wine and visiting with a neighbor at this table.

Just another Wednesday Night - Flower Prep!

I"m working on flowers for a surprise anniversary party for a client. Last night I tried to get all my planted and faux arrangements out of the way, so I can work with the cut flowers tonight.

These are faux topiaries for a mantle. Made with foliage, berries and hydrangeas.

We are doing all white orchids in some Fortunata planters for the the outside tables.

And the plum one is going in the half bath.

The one in the bamboo planter is going on the new coffee table in the living room.

And the one in the zinc is going in a bookshelf in the office.

Can't wait to show the finished product!

When looking for a great paint color for a room - I usually start with greys. I love the way a grey can warm up a room - isn't that ironic? I think grey is a great backdrop for artwork and furniture!

I'm actually working with a new client and her whole downstairs is white - she moved in and didn't know what else to do. Once we get a painter in there - you'll see a fresh coat of Benjamin Moore's Titanium. Pictures to follow at a later date.

Fabulous FInds Fridays...Marble Top Console!

Today I saw a great reproduction marble top console...great for a kitchen server. I could also see it in a keeping room. Could probably see it in a casual den behind a sofa....but I deleted the picture accidentally. (I'm just now learning about my new camera - my pictures will get better!!!) It was around $500 at Southeastern Salvage in Irondale.

So this isn't the piece, but a similar build. This is obviously an antique, but it will give you a general idea if this is something that you are looking for.

So the piece is probably a little longer. And there is no brass trim. There is a narrow drawer across the top under the marble. and then under the other shelves there are also narrow drawers. Love this piece...if only my island didn't have open shelving, I might consider this as a server!

Ok, so here it is..I went back last weekend and they still had 3 left.

This week I was out and about looking for antique pieces for a client. I thought I'd try some different places. I had always seen Noordermeer Antiques - next to Gian Marco's, but had never been by when it was open.
I had always assumed it was European antiques - dutch or swedish with a name like that!

It definitely was not - They had some great eaarly American pieces if that is your desire. The owner is also very knowledgable and interesting to chat with. She guarantees the age of all the pieces as precisely as possible with much research.

I found this 1880s cupboard and am contemplating putting it over my fridge? Love it!

Have you ever wondered what to do with the property between your house and your neighbor's house?

What's mine and what's yours?

Right about now, I was wishing that I had a better picture of the 'before'. Basically our "in between area" was filled with leggy, shrubby, ugly plants - lots of it being Rose of Sharon. It may sound pretty and look pretty when its in a pot at Home Depot, but it is an entirely different beast. (No I wasn't the one that planted it.) It self-seeds - meaning...they are coming up everywhere. I can't tell you how many plants I pulled up the day I cleared the area.

Some time ago, my neighbor and I had talked about making a path between our houses (we are dog sitting buds and often go back and forth between each others houses). And all of a sudden, one Sunday afternoon I found my self clearing out and making room. After the initial demo, in which I unearthed some rocks - I created a border along my driveway and the bed. Next I added the oak leaf hydrangeas and then the hostas and impatiens. I also hand some left-over slate to create a make-shift pathway until we decided on a material.

Once I got the ball rolling, the neighbor decided to add some more to the bed and remove some more shrubs. (and in all honesty she was probably waiting on me to do something, since my side probably looked worse beforehand.) She marked them and I approved and now we have a flowering peach tree in the back corner and some limelight hydrangeas. In her planting...she uncovered more stone...so we've decided to use those for the path.Now, just to find time to level the ground underneath.

I've added more to my side too...so stay tuned for more pictures and the growth of our new proud shared space! Happy Planting!

Fresh Island Centerpiece

For my kitchen island I wanted something fresh...so I chose an assortment of white containers. (All mostly wedding gifts!) The Arte Italica 'Bella Bianca' creamer and sugar made a nice addition to this little story. First, I found one of my most favorite houseplants at home depot and then I worked around the pilea. This variety, otherwise known as the friendship plant, is pictured below...is the one that I most adore. I love it textured and varied bright green and burgundy colors.

Next, I spotted the white Allium budding in my garden. Allium is a bulb (also part of onion family) and it propogates year after year. It is providing height for my grouping in a glass cylinder vase.

Next, I used some budding privet - an ultimate junk plant (at least in my book)- but its doing its job as a filler plant in the ironstone pitcher. I also used it at the Hollywood Showhouse in the tall blue pitcher. From a distance, it looks a smidge like lilac....

You may have lusted over the likes of pillow made with rows of ribbon and velvet. I love this Dransfield and Ross one, especially the detail of the metal detail. A pillow like this would retail around $250-350 each.

Showhouse Reveal

The BIG REVEAL...

I chose Benjamin Moore's Floral White for the room. It was much needed after the 80s pink that was there previously. I put a round table in the space with a beach colored linen cloth and a aqua ikat topper. I also placed a console on the back wall with a mirror propped on it. I love how the mirror's curve almost mimics the arched entrance to the dining room.

Then I brought in the tableware. My placesetting was composed of Arte Italica's Merletto Aqua Dinner Plate, a Craven Victoria plate and an Arte Italica Lino cereal bowl. For the stemware, I chose Juliska - the pewter Emerson Wine looks fabulous with the dinnerware and then it was paired with the Graham Footed Goblet. And the centerpiece is from Fortunata's Arno series.

And the finished product with beautiful white flowers to compliment the floral white walls!

Historic Hollywood Designer Showhouse

This Sunday is the Historic Hollywood Homes Tour in Birmingham, Ala. Tickets are available on their web site and select retail outlets. There are 4 distinctive houses on the tour, including 102 Hollywood Blvd that is a Designer Showhouse. The following designers/stores are featured in the house: Suite Dreams, Table Matters, Pam Evans, Soho Retro, Birmingham Wholesale Furniture, CE Toliver, Leaf and Petal and Cater Landscaping. With Table Matters, I decorated the dining room. Here I'll show you BEFORE pictures.

Making of a Window Display: Annieglass

My inspiration always starts at different places. In preparation for Table Matter's Annieglass Signing Event, I started at Hancock's Fabrics. I wanted to run with the planned theme of the event -Protect our Seafood.

I knew I was going to use Seafood Watch pieces from her sea-inspired collection, but I needed a backdrop to create the movement of the sea. For our windows we usually use 2 or 3 panels depending on how much of the space we want to cover. The panels must be measured precisely, so they all hang even.

This is fun pattern I chose. Enough pattern to show up, yet large enough scale to be seen.

Then I proceeded to hang up party balls and aqua netting to add a little something fun to it. As well as add depth in the top of the window.

I next chose a placesetting to work around - pulling colors out from the back ground and tying them all together. I chose textured pewter colored placemats, a Jan Barboglio nickel hammered nickel charger, a brown Craven dinner, with platinum Annieglass as the salad. For the stemware suite, I used a combination of different colors and style - the goblet is a recycled glass, the double old fashioned has a smoky opulescent hammered look and the fun bubbly hollow champagne flute. I then chose a white basic Matteo napkin to couple with a fun brown and ivory sea inspired napkin ring.

Next I chose various different serving pieces to compliment the dinner settings. I primarily used serving pieces in the Aquamarine and the Seafood Watch collection.Then add in a few faux coral fingers in white and black and there you have the sea as translated with Annieglass dinnerware.

Fabulous Finds Fridays - Reusable Plastic Flatware

I know it seems like I'm really into "plastique" lately, but I think its just this time of year with all the outdoor entertaining that comes along with spring and summer. In the past 5 years, plastic has been constantly reinventing itself - new forms, shapes, colors with all of the innovations of plastic injection molding (how it's made). This week I spotted this re-usable plastic flatware at Tuesday morning. It was $9.99 for a 12 piece set (4 Place Settings). Normal price is $20-25. Would be great to dress a little outdoor entertaining up without having to bring your everyday stainless outside.

They also had a fun Bamboo pattern, As you can see below in my terrible Blackberry photo. If I had to choose, I'd go for the Bamboo! What a great price for entertaining en masse. And its top-rack dishwasher safe!

So you may be asking yourself, are there any guidelines that go along with using and decorating with plastic? Definitely! Less is More!

2nd Stop - Fleurgriege : A Unique Floral Studio

After reading the Washington Post article about the floral designer that embellished my uncle's house for the Christmas holidays, I was intrigued to see Jeanette Momeni's studio- Fleurgreige. The article marked her style as ultra-naturalistic. And I would dare take it a step further and say that's organic, but modern with a little romance.

My uncle offered me a private tour of Fleurgreige as Momeni had closed early to pick her children up from school. The walls were a deep charcoal - a stunning backdrop for any bouquet of flowers. Very clean lines with tons of European style.

At the stairway entrance to her studio, bouquets were offered for a mere $20.

Sure beats the bouquets from Whole Foods in price and style!

Not your usual florist shelf filled with glass cubes. Tons of cool containers!

Coincidentally she also references her collection in the Post article saying, "I like to be different from those glass cubes that you see everywhere."

Her inspiration area - filled with photos of her own work, as well as a well edited stack of books from notorious designers, such as Christian Tortu.

1st Stop in D.C. - Marston Luce Antiques

We took the train up from Richmond to D.C. for a day trip.

And believe it or not it was my husband's first train ride!!! Cheers!

Our first stop after deboarding the train at Union Station was to my uncle's antique store to pick up a key to his house, where we were staying. Upon entry, we were greeted by his Jack Russell, Dink.{Side note: Dink is an Irish bred Jack Russell - which translates to very calm and loveable.} And we were very surprised and excited to learn that my uncle was still in town and had yet to depart for his home in the southwest of France.

Marston was still in town because a shipment had landed at port before he left and he had to stay to price and merchandise all of the new pieces. I will share with you a few of my favorite pieces from the new shipment.

I need a new dining table! This would be perfect...if only I could afford the price tag!

Love this white lamp, especially on this refined French pine piece.

And this Swedish armoire my husband and I both fell in love with.

He had multiples of this vase. It was simple and had a grey-tint with an emblem stamped on the neck. It was one piece that I seriously contemplated. At only $150, it was one of the only pieces in my price range.

Fabulous Finds Fridays - Living Art

I happened upon this Olivier Giugni's book a few weeks ago and I have literally read this beautiful coffee table book - cover to cover! He is the owner of a Manhattan floral boutique called L'Olivier. He hails from Brignoles, a Provencal town in the the Southeast of France. He has a very sleek style - read modern, but in a way that speaks to you.

In this book you explore the interiors of private residences and here you really see how many details are forethought in his designs. He wants the floral installations to compliment the interior design. And many of the designs are meant to last and be a part of the houses' design.

This designer's book will definitely spark your imagination - even if this isn't your style. It will make you think of things in different ways and expand your horizons with different compositions and plant material. Run out and buy this book!

It is a MUST have for any flower lover's book collection.

Miami Vice Blue

So on my first visit to my husband's childhood home, I realized why there are no prodigy child decorator's. When my husband was about 11 or 12 his mother let him pick out his room color.

He chose this color:

At first glance, this may look like a nice beach-y color - however; it is a little more electric than my picture reveals. My husband attributes this color to Miami Vice. He wasn't quite old enough to watch it, but it "seemed so cool."

In all fairness, the shade of blue was somewhere in between my photo and this Miami Vice logo. But combined with the red plain drapes, something wasn't quite working with his design.

As a child I was never able to make the complete decorating decisions about my room. My mom always laid out the basics - but I was then able to rearrange my furniture however and as often as I wanted. I may attribute my spatial ability/talent to being able to express my self by rearranging as a child. So mothers take note - you choose the paint colors, wallpaper, carpet, or drapes then let your child have fun accessorizing and rearranging!

Your child can always choose what color they want to paint their room in college - College is a time for experimenting isn't it?

Since Saturday I've been away with my husband visiting his mother in Richmond (hence the lack of posts).

Don't worry I'm gathering plenty of fodder for more blogs to come - highlights include, Seeing my husband's childhood home for the first time, traveling to DC on a train, visiting my uncle's antique store - Marston Luce, a unique flower school, and seeing the gilded Maymont estate to name a few.

A Few of My Favorite Things

The day after my birthday I thought I'd share a few of my favorite gifts.

A Juliska naomi vase. A few years ago the floral desinger that did Princess Dianna's wedding came into the store. He was in town giving a lecture at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. He purchased this vase in clear and green. He said it was the perfect vase because you only needed one bloom!

I think it makes a beautiful statement - simple and elegant. I also love the sculptural feel of it too - even beautiful with no flowers at all. Can't wait to find the perfect place for it!

An Aquamarine & Pearl Torsade Necklace. Even though I'm a March baby, I've never been in love with Aquamarine stones. Most people ask me if I was born in February since I wear a ring adorned with an ametheyst stone on my right hand. When I saw this piece that my husband gave me I feel in love. I liked the fact that the stones were raw and not cut and polished - it has more of a natural look. I am looking forward to wearing it often and eventually passing it down to my children one day and telling them that their father gave it to me for my 30th birthday.

Too Good to Wait - Chic Striped Rug

Yesterday on the way to the grocery store, I asked my husband if I could make my habitual monthly visit to Southeastern Salvage in Ironodale, Ala. Its that sort of place...where you never know what you are going to find. It could be all junk or some amazing finds. Years ago, I found my kitchen island there.

But yesterday, I saw this amazing rug by Chilewich.

Its a vinyl shag - meaning its tufted from durable vinyl yarns for a textured 'looped' look. It would be beautiful in a white kitchen (as pictured above) - giving that added pop. But also fab on a screened porch or patio. It can easily be cleaned by mopping or vacuuming - ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, terraces and any house with a dog!

They had the 3'x 5' in stock and it was a whopping $9.98 - so if you live in Birmingham - run out and buy it if you are contemplating. It normally retails for $150!!! Happy Shopping!

They aren't located in my area, but I love checking their website and facebook page to see what they are up to! Instead (they) affirm the transformative power of applying a fresh, creative vision to quality antiques."

Check out how cute and cozy this wing back chair looks. Love seeing what fabric they are using. I could red that whole stack of books just sitting there!

Garden Green Juliska Reminiscent of Old Majolica Leaf Plates?

So by now I'm sure you've seen Juliska's new Garden Green at your local retailer. At first glance, I thought it looked a little Christmasy - coming out right after the holiday season? And a rightful companion to the Ruby Red...

Surely it could be used as a holiday pattern, but the more that I've been using it in displays - the more it is reminding me of the old Majolica leaf plates. Not quite as intense and quite a different texture, but almost the same.

That green has the richness of an antique and the sophistication of a timeless pattern.

See how I combined it here with a gold Annieglass dinner, berry & thread salad.

So pretty...dressed up or down! Great for a little pop of color!

A reason to go home every season is the 'block party' held on the Sunday preceding Mardi Gras - the OOM general party. Underneath century old water oak trees, in the shadows of historic buildings, crowds filling the streets in their sunday best - as the invitation suggests suits and ladies dresses (and you might spot a fur coat or two).

This is the setting:

Guests line the streets as the a leading lady is presented on the OOM emblem float carried by mules. The emblem for this society is Folly chasing Death around the column of life. At the end of the parade, Death is defeated and Folly wins the day! The young lady, a grown daughter of one of the upsanding members, is then toasted and the party truly begins.

Women wear their finest sunday suits and many in hats and gloves. It is truly a party for the ages. Below: my husband and I at the OOMs this year.

And I wish I could begin to describe the food, in the way that food writer would, but I can't. Instead I'm going to share a few exerpts from an article from Saveur Magazine.

"Tantalized by the savory smoke filling the air, I snake through the crowd to a tent where grills are loaded with lamb chops, beef tenderloins, and sausages. The lamb chops are so succulent that the juices dribble down my chin. Across the street is another grill, full of oysters on the half shell, and everyone's stabbing forks into them while they're still over the coals. Wherever I turn, I'm being introduced to that cousin or this aunt; the queen has scads of relatives here... Drinking may pervade Mardi Gras, but great food and family is what truly keeps this tradition going."

Where do Mardi Gras Floats Come From?

First off, Happy Mardi Gras everyone! We just returned from Mardi Gras in my hometown of Mobile, Ala. I thought on this eve I would give everyone an inside look at the making of a Mardi Gras float. On Saturday since it was raining we visited one mystic society's float barn with my nephew, John Paul. Don't worry these beautiful floats are rolling down the streets of Mobile tonight!

Each year, a new theme for the entire parade is decided long in advance. This year this particular society chose "The Tempest" from Shakespeare and each float will depict certain scences or characters. The bases of each float are reused and if repairs are needed then those usually take place starting in the summer. First, the gold leafing is scrubbed off with a large brush and then any repairs are made. Floats are primed white to start with a clean slate and then the creation begins. Many old 'forms' are saved from year to year so they won't have to be rebuilt from scratch. For example, the cactus on the left below could be turned into field goal posts.

Heap of Forms:

Any new forms are attached and then the new design is laid out in charcoal and the basics are painted in. "Basics" mean the basic colors in the design: an area of red here, green there. Sometimes a basics painter will do this, other times the detail artist will do this himself. Once the basics are done, the detail work is painted onto the float. Finally, it is gold leafed and ready to go.

I Scream, You Scream -- WE all scream for ice cream spoons...

With the weather being so nice, its hard not to want to stop by the ice cream shop. These wonderful little demi-tasse spoons are quite unlike anything I've seen. The bright -happy candy colored spoons are great for ice cream, condiments and what-ever your little heart desires. At only $4 each - what a fun and unique gift!

Shoe Flower Arrangement

I was asked to do an arrangement for the grand opening of Gus Mayer's shoe department at the Summit. Our inspiration was a wire high heel...see how I combined these three containers to make a beautiful spring arrangement.

Step One: Double line the moss container with a garbage bag and fill with a few packing peanuts (for drainage) and fill wih potting soil.

Step Two: Cut oasis block to the size of the shoe. Any sort of knife will just cut right through it. And secure the shoe to the oasis with u-shaped wire pins.

Step Three: Place the shoe in the middle of the moss planter. Line the shoe with sheet moss to fill the wire form.

Step Four: Begin adding live plants. I selected ferns, tulips and hyacinths. I selected certain areas of the container to plant - so the shoe would still be seen from certain points of view.

Step Five: I then begin adding some cut plants/flowers that I placed in floral water tubes. I kept the stems cut low, so they would just be a ground cover around the remainder of the base planter.

Step Six: Begin adding flowers in floral water tubes to the high heel as well. And then secure and cover with sheet moss.

Step Seven: Cut the extra liner back and tuck into the planter. Then begin adding mood moss to finish off around the flowers and cover any oasis that is showing. {Note: Its best to wet the mood moss first and then squeeze it like a sponge. It cleans it and makes it more pliable to work with and mold around plantings.}

Step Eight: I then finished of the moss planter or shoe box with a pretty blue ribbon and attached with pearl tipped pins. The shoe department has sky blue accents, so I wanted to pull that into the compostion.

Step Nine: I then used the same method of planting the wire handbag. I lined it with moss and filled with potting soil and peanuts. Wrapped the handle in the blue ribbon and placed some of the pink spray roses in the floral water tubes.

Step Ten: I've added a white primrose the the handbag and also lined the outer edge of the high heel with satin white ribbon to highlight the lines of the shoe. As well as a sassy bow to the heel in the sky blue

ribbon.

And Voila!!!

Becoming the MRS...

My husband and I married in May of 2010. And after 20-some-odd years of being Harriet Luce, I must convert my entire life's business and social worlds to my new name -- Alley. How much fun?!!

Of course the first and easiest to change was my email and following that my signature on my work email. Not to continue to bore you with the details - but next there was social security, driver's license, bank, credit cards, insurance, etc! And everyone wanted the information in a different format and had different requirements (and many got my name wrong at first - Harriet Herndon Alley- yes, they really dropped my maiden last name and just added my new one.- even a bank that my family owns got it wrong and my high school!)

{On a side note: there is a website called Miss Now Mrs that will change your name and I had considered it for only $29.95. Maybe I should have gone that route!!}

So now for the fun part of it, stationary and casual calling cards. After searching online and not really finding what my little heart was desiring - I went to etsy of course and found many designs that I had a hard time deciding between!!

First off, calling cards with just my name for birthday gifts and baby showers and informal gifts. Found these precious cards from siskastudio. I loved the botanical inspiration of course and the fun colors AND the paper was a beautifully, textured heavy stock. Just used my first one, last weekend for a birthday happy! These also came packaged in a little box with a ribbon around it - cute little gift - especially for a newly wed!

Next was some stationary for the both of us to use. I didn't want a monogrammed design, since I wanted us to both be able to use it. I found this chic and simple (read: not overly girly) design from DotsAndDahlias.

And finally, some fun stickers with both of our names for gifts, baked goods, etc....Still anxiously checking the mailbox everyday for these, but here is the proof. I chose option A.

Fabulous Finds Fridays...Shagreen Placemats

So these two placemats look great, right? I love the texture of this shagreen mat. Its a great color and the round is a super versatile size. One of these mats is $62 and the other is $14.

So what's the difference...They look the same right?

The one on the left is made by Sybaritic. The one on the right is made by CLI Group.

What Makes You Happy?

Every morning I see this giclee print that we bought on our most recent trip to the Keys in November and it makes me happy. Its tranquil, beautiful and relaxing.

We purchased it at the Rain Barrel Artists' Village. Its near Islamorada and at first glance this might be somewhere where I would NOT stop hence I made my husband take a hard right to whip into the gravel parking lot graced with yard art, wind socks, etc. Had I not recognized the name from my friend's email, we would've keep on crusin' in our rental red mustang convertible.

Just walk through the first section and don't even look = lots of shells for sale and airbrush art. In the back are a few individual galleries (and some really neat pottery) and this is where I happened upon John David Hawver's work. I felt in love instantly and knew it was meant to be since I didn't purchase anything on our honeymoon in Key West - after dragging Rogers to every gallery there.

Not Red or Pink?!

A very cheery Valentine's Day it was as my husband and I celebrated our first holiday as a married couple! We did not do the traditional - red roses or even pink for that matter. Although I insist that he not buy flowers on Valentine's - since the prices are inflated the MOST that week because of the high demand (the inner florist in me speaking). So I tell him that he really shouldn't and that I'd rather have some randomly another time.

I arrive home and have a dozen yellow and a dozen white tulips on my kitchen island in a vase. (A.He has learned over the years that I would rather him not buy a new vase, so he picked one out of my shed full of containers. B. He has learned to not get them at the florist anymore...since I would rather arrange them and disperse them around the housemyself.Smart Man!) How convenient that the wholesale florist is out his back door from work?!

So I took the yellow ones and put them in an ironstone pitcher that was a wedding gift (and actually was given to me with flowers gracing it!)

And a few of the white ones in my favorite Simon Pearce vase next to our wedding picture in our bedroom.

For Rogers I got some bookplates. As a child growing up as a son of a librarian, he loved having book plates for his favorite books. And still being an AVID reader - it seemed appropriate. For dinner, I went with my inner cajun and made grillades and grits! And for dessert - dreamcakes wedding cupcakes!!! Happy Valentine's to All and especially to my husband Rogers!!!

Refinished!

Well I've finally gotten around to re-staining the 'new' kitchen table. Wiped down the piece with very fine steel wool and stain and then wiped with a clean cloth. How easy is that? I used minwax's English Chestnut wood stain from Little Hardware. And you can also peak at my new slate floors here too!!!

I'm sure everyone is very familiar with Phillippe Starck's Ghost Chair. A comfortable chair in transparent and coloured polycarbonate in the Louis XV style: it is the quintessence of baroque revisited to dazzle, excite and captivate. They have made a resurgence in the past few years and with that has come many "copy cats."

Below is the original that is available in clear or batch dyed polycarbonate.

The ones manufactured by Kartell can run you around $400 for EACH armchair.

Rehabbing an Old Piece of Furniture

We've just redone our kitchen floors, so of course as we started to move the furniture back in - and my wheels started turning. I thought... I can rearrange and revitalize my look. The island's position is pretty standard, so that will stay. Then the rest I didn't put back in. I've been thinking about a new piece under the window. A really more functional, utilitarian piece. Before there was a demilune that didn't really hold much - no drawers and limited top space. Just so happened that I went to visit my parents in Mobile during the middle of my moving back in. I found a great table with two drawers that was my grandparents. I love antiques! This piece just needs a little bit of a rehab. The top on the left side has some curious white marks - and they aren't rings?

Our first christmas was filled with much joy and happiness. Carol came down from Richmond and my parents came up from Mobile. Here are some photos of my home during the holidays...enjoy!!!

We found this great looking old whiskey barrell at Lowe's(of all places). It was perfect for containing my tree in such a small space and I loved the old world feel.

This is how we dined leading up to Christmas and then on Christmas Day - I used my Herend - Rothschild Bird for the first time!

I love giving gifts and this one I must admit has a great presentation. One of my good friends is getting married one month from today and I thought a little 'happy' was in order for the day. I had previously given her a Juliska Amalia champagne flute for her engagement so what else to give her than another to share with her fiance along with a bottle of champagne. I also just happened upon an antique hand towel that graced her soon-to-be last initial - if I had been looking for it; I wouldn't have found it, but it was perfect for this occasion. Happy Wedding Sid!!!

Parker's Love for a Sofa & Designer Pillows

It's saturday morning at the Alley household and I'm getting ready to pack up the car to do the Altar flowers at All Saints Episcopal Church in Homewood. I try to pick all of the flowers that I use for Flower Guild, so I found some black eyed susan's, purple cone flower, oak leaf hydrangeas and Annabelle hydrangeas, fern, hosta and pink mop head hydrangeas.

I was inspired by a cocktail that I had out in Santa Monica about a month ago. It was the most refreshing and interesting drink that I had drank in a long time. It was a Blackberry Smash - citron vodka, blackberries, mint, sour mix and blackberry liquor. I ran with the blackberry theme and dug up an old beer stein that was my grandmother's. It was adorned with what -- how convenient blackberries! I used deep purple and brown napkins and drew from some colors on the pitcher to pick out my serving pieces. I filled the stein with wheat colored giant mums and purple glads. In my bar area I filled my Jan Barboglio piece with purple glads and sunflowers.

For the party I served appetizers and the blackberry smashes. I had seared scallops on parmesean crisps, cheese wafers, pork & bell pepper skewers, artichoke leaves with aioli, and bruchetta. It was a smash! Wish you had been there!

Simon Pearce Window

I wanted to accent the blue in Simon's new signature pottery line. I found this super cool fabric that looks like it's handpainted at Hancock's. I gave it a fall flair with some oak branches that conveniently fell out of my tree at house the night before. From Vermont, they send all the wooden shaping tools that they use in making the glass. I was so luckily to be able to use those in my display. They also send a blowing rod (not sure if that is the technical term)! White pumpkins and brown leaves also accent Simon's beautiful glass and pottery. I can't wait for Simon to see it on Oct. 7!
